How the test and key are built

Blocks are separated by blank lines. In each block, line 1 is the question and every later line is an option (2 to 8 options). The option starting with * is correct, and exactly one is allowed per question.

Key = position of the starred option, shown as a letter (1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C and so on) or as a number. Leading numbers such as "1." on questions and prefixes such as "A)" on options are removed and replaced by the chosen label style.

To make a multiple-choice test online, type each question with its answer options, put an asterisk in front of the correct one, and the tool formats a clean test paper with a matching answer key. You can print it, copy it as plain text or share a link to the exact test you built.

How to use the test maker

  1. Type a title for the test, for example the unit or topic name.
  2. In the questions box, write the first question on one line and put each answer option on its own line below it.
  3. Put an asterisk (*) at the start of the correct option. Every question needs exactly one.
  4. Leave a blank line, then start the next question the same way.
  5. Choose the option labels (A, B, C, or a, b, c, or 1, 2, 3) and decide whether the answer key is included on the printout.
  6. Check the preview, then press Print test, Copy as text or Copy link to this test.

How it is calculated

There is no scoring maths here, only a simple rule: the answer key is the position of the starred option in each question, converted into a label. Position 1 becomes A (or a, or 1), position 2 becomes B, and so on up to H. The question count is the number of blank-line-separated blocks.

The tool also tidies the input: a leading number on a question (such as "1.") and a prefix on an option (such as "A)") are removed and replaced by the label style you choose, so numbering always stays consistent. The standard multiple-choice structure is used: a stem (the question), one correct answer (the key) and incorrect options (the distractors).

Frequently asked questions

How many questions and options can I add?

Up to 100 questions, each with 2 to 8 options. Most classroom tests use four options per question, labelled A to D.

Can a question have more than one correct answer?

Not in this format. Each question must have exactly one option marked with an asterisk. If you want a "select all that apply" item, write it as a single question whose options are combinations, such as "A and B only".

Does the order of the correct answers matter?

It helps to vary the position of the correct answer so students cannot guess a pattern. Check the answer key row: if it reads like the same letter repeated, reorder some of your options.

Is my test saved anywhere?

No. Everything is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded. If you want to keep a test, use Copy as text to paste it into a document, or Copy link to this test to save an address that restores your questions.

How do I save the test as a PDF?

Press Print test and choose "Save as PDF" as the printer in the print dialog. The answer key starts on its own page so you can keep it separate from the copies you hand out.

From the classroom to the road

Quizzes are not only for school. Trainers and teachers who run workshops, field trips or study weeks away from home often print a test for the end of the session. When you plan an event like that, compare accommodation by location, distance to the venue and facilities such as a quiet room or a printer, so the group can rest well between sessions.
